Brought home secretly by grandfather, he tears clothes and curtains, breaks dishes, and torments the other animals in the private zoo. Though tied up to keep him out of trouble, he manages to escape and create chaos. On a train journey he is smuggled along hidden inside a kit-bag, from which he bursts out to the alarm of the other passengers. In one of the funniest episodes, on a cold day Toto climbs into a large pot of warm water meant for a bath; he enjoys soaking in it, dipping in and out, until the water becomes too hot, whereupon he leaps out. Through these and other antics, Toto proves himself a beautiful but utterly naughty pet, and his adventures keep the household — and the reader — thoroughly entertained.
