  7. 7. Several causes combined to bring about the French Revolution. Socially, France was divided into three estates: the clergy and the nobility enjoyed special privileges and paid no taxes, while the third estate — peasants, workers and the middle class — carried the entire burden of taxation, creating deep resentment. Economically, the state faced a severe financial crisis from costly wars and lavish royal spending, while ordinary people suffered from rising bread prices and food shortages, a subsistence crisis. Intellectually, the ideas of Enlightenment thinkers about liberty, equality and government by consent inspired the educated middle class to question the old order. When Louis XVI tried to impose new taxes, these pressures combined and the third estate rose up, sparking the Revolution of 1789.
