  7. 7. Several types of farming are practised in India depending on resources and conditions. Primitive subsistence farming is carried out on small patches of land using simple tools like the hoe and family labour, and includes slash-and-burn cultivation; it depends on the monsoon and natural fertility. Intensive subsistence farming is practised in regions with high population pressure on land, using a great deal of labour and inputs on small holdings to produce as much as possible, often with more than one crop a year. Commercial farming uses modern inputs such as high-yielding seeds, fertilisers and machinery to grow crops mainly for sale in the market; plantation farming, which grows a single crop like tea or coffee over a large area for sale, is one form of it. The same crop may be grown commercially in one region and for subsistence in another.
